Piano Arrangement Technique - Stride Piano and Bud Powell Voicing
Reference: The Jazz Piano Book Ch.17
Stride Piano
Fundamental Pattern 1
This pattern is derived from "walking tenth" by adding a note within the tenth interval structure. This is just a simple variation of innumerable tenth patterns.
Using Pattern 1 in Playing
The book gives an example of how to approximate this style, shown below.
Bud Powell Voicing
One of the advantages of Bud Powell voicing is that it allows us to play right-hand melodies around middle C. Whereas Bill Evans-Wynton Kelly left hand voicing (also known as rootless voicing) restricts the right hand to a higher range of the keyboard.
Bud Powell Voicings are essentially shell chords (two or three notes), usually consist:
- roots
- 3 (10), 7, 9
Examples
